Unproductive? What I do!

We all have those days when we are just not achieving what we set out to do and I am having one of those days today.  I thought this is an ideal time to analyse why its happening and what I do about it.  Today, my biggest issue is technology!  No real surprise there.  I wrote down a few notes that might help you, when you have a day like I am having.

First I try to find the reason behind my lack of productivity.  It makes me feel better if I know there is a reason.  This can be anything from lack of sleep, having something important on my mind, there are distractions such as home life or I am not motivated to work on the project at hand.  Once I have the reason, I can decide what to do about it.  Sometimes there is no reason or many reasons so I just remind myself that that’s ok too.

I almost always take a break.  I go get a coffee, chat to a friend on social media or text, or go into the garden for some air.  10 minutes or so may be enough for you to get your groove back on.

If things have not improved, I move on to another task.  Chances are if you are not motivated to work on a particular project, 10 minutes will not really help.  If you are making a journal, try making the tags, download digitals, cut something out; I try to do a task that is easy so that I can use the time to think.

If this is not really an option because I just know I will not achieve anything, I use the time to learn.  This can also be a great motivator but be careful; it can also be the start of yet another project that may not get finished!  I watch YouTube, learn a technique, watch someone new, watch something completely unrelated to what I do.  If I feel like I have learnt something, I feel more productive even if I have not created anything myself.

I always find that I am more productive if I have planned and am prepared, that’s another post, but I sometimes use unproductive days to plan future projects, the following week or even long term goals and tasks.  I am realistic though; I know these may not be complete, as unproductive days will pop up again!

So in short, my top tips for those unproductive days:

  • Try to figure out the reason for your unproductive day.
  • Take a short break
  • Move onto another task
  • Learn something new
  • Plan

Oh, one last thing … on an unproductive day, try to make someone smile.  That will ALWAYS make you feel better.

    I agree it is great advice. I especially like the idea that while trying to figure out why you are unproductive, it may be many things or nothing you can put your finger on. I think many times when I am blocked I further frustrate myself by feeling I “have to get to the bottom of it” and figure out precisely why I am blocked. Now I will talk to a friend or take a walk or play with the dogs. Thanks!

  7. At least once a week I experience unproductivity for some unknown reason. Its like writers block. It makes me bonkers. So, I use that time for another passion, reading. Your observations and advice are spot on. I’m sure it will help other creative folks. Thanks.

  9. All good point’s I often have the Squirrel moment 🙂 For me I have to select small amounts of stuff other wise I am digging for other stuff . By then I don’t have time to craft.

    Yes! I’m having an unproductive month (maybe more) but I realise that my head isn’t in the best place right now so I’m also trying to be gentle with myself. I am however enjoying lots of youtube and gathering ideas for my next project when I start again.

  11. Thank you Tracie! I happened to need this advice today as I’ve needed it for the last 5 months! Lol. I complained that I couldn’t craft or make videos because I didn’t have the space. So we completely made over a media room into my craft room. Tore out built ins, relaid the floor and put in craft related furniture. It currently looks as though a tornado went through it and I’m still not crafting, making journals or videos. It was an expensive lesson to learn that it had nothing to do with the space and everything to do with my fear of failure and/or not creating things as enchanting as I see the rest of you creating. I’m frozen in fear and would so love to finally “thaw out!” I need you, Sabrina (craftysabby) and Eva (Bohmian crafter) to come play at my house for a week!! I need yall’s fabulous mojo to rub off! Lol.

    1. Ah Wendy. First I hope you will finally feel excited about you new space. Maybe make a plan of the tasks you would like to achieve to get the room complete? Second, I for one, would love to come craft with you but you know we can be with you everyday on YT as you craft! This lack of motivation has gone on for some time so this is not an ‘unproductive day’. Plan a small task Wendy, maybe taking apart jewellery, or a piece of clothing or cut paper on a trimmer ready for pockets. You don’t need a craft room for any of that and it would be something that will make you feel like you are creating. Start small! Finally, please do not compare yourself to others. You have your own value to your audience and to yourself and people love you for who you are. We don’t want you to be other people, we have them already, we need you to be you.

    I’m forever trying to make people, especially myself, smile – unproductivity at it’s best or in my case a serious bout of procrastination and too many ideas fighting to get to the forefront of my limited brain capacity. I am spending tonnes of time online, watching YouTube, collecting ideas and learning ooooooh so much in the meantime. I reckon it’s normal in our very chockablock creative minds to be quite volatile and jump around from one thing to the other and keeping in-line and motivated to finish a project from start to the very end without deviating is so difficult – word of the month for me is DISTRACTION, love-hate relationship going on with that one
    Love this blog, you’re doing so flipping well! Keep at it and you can tell us whatever you want, but I doubt you have an unproductive second to your day 😉

  15. Sometimes after all those things I’m just having a creative down day and go with it…. I used to get frustrated when nothing was happening but now I realise you get ‘overload’ and just need to not do anything creative… daily life needs to take preference sometimes. The worst thing is you feel creative and you can’t find the time to fit it in….. grrr!!!
