The Truth: YouTube and Negativity

I was not sure about posting this. However, if I can help just one person, it is worth it. I want to start this by saying that this is simply my opinion and strategy for dealing with negativity on YouTube. I hope my thoughts do not offend anyone, as that is not my intention. I had a comment today on my YouTube channel that really upset me. It was not a negative comment towards me, this was worse; it was a comment from a wonderful subscriber saying they were to scared to make videos because they may receive negative comments!

The truth is you probably will. The thing I have found is the bigger your channel grows, the more negative comments and dislikes you get. I am very lucky, I do not get too many of them and I have the most wonderful subscribers, I cannot tell you how grateful I am. In reality, my channel is still small but when you are starting out, the chances of negativity are very slim.

Here is the thing; you really have to remember that the negative comments are about the person making them and not about ‘you’. It is about how they feel and not about how ‘you’ feel. I must say, if I get a bad comment it makes my heart sink for a second or two as it would for anyone but then I remember a few things. I would certainly say, it’s worth you thinking about them too.

First, they have spent time, however short, watching my video. That means, I am getting paid because of their engagement and I am thankful to them. Because of them, I can keep doing what I love. They probably have given the video a thumbs down too so this along with the comment, boosts my viewer engagement rating which means I am more likely to be in the recommended for you list. Any engagement helps your channel to grow!

Second, and I believe most important, is that the comment they make can be for many, many reasons. They may have something bad going on in their lives right now. Maybe they are losing or have lost a loved one. Maybe they have had a negative experience on YouTube that day themselves. Maybe they have had some really bad news. This is something I always think about and it helps me remember that this is not about me. It very well may be because they are an unpleasant person. If this is the case, well, I feel bad for them because it cannot make for a happy life. This also may still be down to their circumstance and may not be their fault, but it certainly is not yours!

Third, focus on the good. This is something the person making the comment is unable to do at this time for whatever reason. You give a lot of yourself when you create a video. You share your knowledge, opinions, ideas with people and so many people are grateful for that. The positive comments, the lovely people far outweigh the negative. Focus on the good; it’s the best way to get through life. I will read it out loud to my self. ‘I have 1000 views, 135 likes and 3 not likes.’ Those 3 not likes become insignificant.

My final thought: Please, if you want to make a video…make it. Do not let the fear of what might happen stop you and certainly do not let negatively from others stop you. Do it for you and the many people that will want to watch, will enjoy watching and will continue watching. Further more, if you watch a video and do not like it…move on. Watch something new and spend your short life enjoying.  Its sad you have to think about this, before you even begin your journey but I hope this will encourage some of you to start a YouTube Channel.

Thank you so much for reading, Tracie x

  4. Hi there. In fairness I’ve not yet watched your YouTube channel, but I think your comments are valid for dealing with any negative comments or experiences with people that you come across anywhere. Definitely remembering that you don’t know what is going on for them at the moment is a useful way to help deal with people’s rudeness and/or negativity. Thank you for sharing this… I glad you did

  6. Very sensible thoughts. Whatever you do in life there will be the negative people, but you can’t stop doing stuff just because of them. If people would only live by the mantra “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all”!!

Thank you for writing this, I also needed to be reminded about the bigger picture, good always outweighs the bad. I just started my own YouTube channel a couple weeks ago and I’m having so much fun with it (I am so excited I have 28 subscribers already). You are a great inspiration. Thank you for everything you do.

Thanks for writing this!!! Some days are tougher than others, you know, days that you don’t feel 100% sure about yourself or what you’ve created and I tend to just not do the video or upload it that day for fear of “failure”. But getting there – practice is the best cure ;-)))

Hi Tracie, thank you for posting this. My family and friends keep telling me to start a YouTube channel. Two things are stopping me. One will people be mean? And two (and this is more scary) will anyone watch? How did you build up a following? I know you’re a busy woman so sorry for the question but I’d love to know. Kind regards Ali

    1. Seriously, just go for it! You don’t give people a chance to watch anything if you don’t put up content. People will not flock to your channel to start with, it takes time and effort to make anything worthwhile work. But you can do it … You got this 😀
I think I may write a quick guide for the blog today. Hope this will help you. but please…DO IT!!!

  22. Thank you Tracy, I have a selfie stick stuck in a pot of rocks ready to go for a month now but not brought myself to film anything. Then I thought what could I provide or enlighten everyone on that has not already been filmed by all you talented ladies on youtube. ( I can talk myself out of anything!) This gave me a push to maybe try. Thanks!

    1. So, GO FOR IT. Also, we all teach, share, explain, discuss things in different ways. Some people will like how we do it, some will not. You could copy one of my videos, or anyones, and yours WILL be different. There are people out there that will like how YOU do things. Do not worry about things already being done! GO GO GO xx Good luck xx

I have often wondered why someone thinks there is a need to say something ugly about someone. If you don’t like what your seeing just turn it off. For me the fear in youtube is actually talking when the red light on the camera comes on and not feeling totally silly sitting in a room talking to myself. It has taken me two years to finally put up a youtube video. I’m not very good at it because my mind stumbles when I’m talking out loud to my self, but I have a real dream that is so important to me and that dream needs for me to get better at youtube so I’m trying. Right now I am trying to find the time and space to film where no one else can hear me talking. Funny, how that camera can impact your life isn’t it?

    1. Yes it is but I promise, it gets easier. Especially with the wonderful support that is out there. Congrats on doing it xx

Hi again, not sure if you’re still blogging? But I just wanted to say that you were right, people in our jj community are so kind and encouraging. I am building my little channel slowly and I just got a new camera this week so I hope my films will be better quality, but even with my old camera and no experience people have been lovely. I’m so glad I took the plunge and went for it. I’ve been ill for 2 weeks but this week I will be back online and loving it. Thanks again Tracie for the encouragement. On YouTube I am The Cockney Crafter. Best wishes, Ali xx

  27. Hi Tracie, I Need to wipe dust off my blog and would love to start a channel and I found your post so useful and your comments so encouraging that After watching so many of your videos “quietly in a corner ” I had to raise my hand and tell you: you are not only a great artist but a generous e genuinely (not sure this word actually exists but right now It is not possibile to google) kind person. I am a Flight attendant and this post contains all those Little truths I have to repeat myself so many times a day… Thanks for the refresh and for bringing that positive thought to a different level. 28. Hi Tracie, started to watch your channel a while ago and enjoy binding books and crafting while listening to you very much 🙂 Please go on! I don’t do videos yet but I’d like to someday. Since english is not my native language , I’m pretty sure I’m gonna have a hard time doing videos in english, because this is what I’m looking for. But I think I won’t care too much because in the end of the day I will know that I created something and all they can do is offending people and all the have is bitterness in their hearts. Greeting, Danni from Germany xxx
